Transporting goods has
always been a crucial issue, playing a role in social
and economical development, and bringing closer demand
and offer. Today, logistic has reached a strategical function
amongst firms and transportation demand is growing fast:
in 2020, it could reach 40% for goods.
Those traffic evolution
tendencies lead to substantial consequences on health
and environment. Indeed, a lack of control in transport
development is a source of accidents, noise, pollution,
and space and non-renewable energy consumption.
As fossil fuels are becoming
more and more expensive, their world reserves decreasing
in a context of geopolitical instability, firms and local
authorities must be able to adapt their transport strategies
to the necessity of environmental protection in order
to achieve local sustainable development. Other external
constraints, such as, lawful evolution and public opinion
lead firms and local authorities to change their transportation
methods. In addition, internal needs such as making financial
economy and improving the image for the different stakeholders
(including the salaries) are contributing to these changes.
To help answer these
different challenges, the handbook “Environmental
performances of transportation and logistic practices”
proposes a three-dimensional approach. Created by the
Orée non-profit organization and its members, with
a specific partnership with the French logistic association
Aslog, the handbook first takes into account the territorial
aspect of the issue, making a distinction between the
local, regional, and French national levels. Secondly,
it offers a multi-stakeholders think-tank, looking for
a bigger awareness and mobilization on environmental transportation
issues. This to achieve sharing good practices and exchanges
of innovating experiences.
Finally, this handbook
gives concrete tools to implement new practices: 16 adapted
experience feedbacks, action programs, indicators are
here to orientate during the process of change.
In parallel to this handbook, are available on this website
adaptable tools which give additional elements to implement
these new practices.
This handbook is written
for firm managers and persons in charge of local authorities,
transport / logistic managers, environmental or sustainable
development managers, and of course all the people who
have an influence on the transport demand.
